Wisdom Teeth Removal Cost TaurangaWisdom Teeth Removal in Papamoa and Tauranga

If you are searching for the cost of wisdom teeth removal in Tauranga or the price to have them removed, you are likely experiencing discomfort or planning ahead to prevent future problems. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually erupt between the ages of 15 and 25. In many cases, there is insufficient space for them to grow properly, leading to impaction.

Impacted wisdom teeth may become trapped beneath the gum or against neighbouring teeth. This can result in pain, swelling, infection and damage to surrounding structures. Early assessment allows potential issues to be identified before complications develop.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth do not always cause immediate symptoms. However, problems may develop over time, sometimes without obvious warning signs. Common concerns include:

  • Persistent or intermittent toothache
  • Swelling around the back teeth
  • Infection or gum inflammation
  • Damage to neighbouring teeth
  • Dental crowding
  • Cysts or other complications

Assessment using clinical examination and imaging helps determine whether monitoring or removal is the most appropriate course of action.

Proactive Assessment or Emergency Removal

Some patients choose to assess their wisdom teeth before discomfort occurs, while others seek treatment once pain or swelling develops. Early evaluation may reduce surgical complexity and recovery time in certain cases.

Emergency removal may be required if infection, severe pain or swelling is present. Prompt treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent the condition from worsening.

Price to Get Wisdom Teeth Removed

Your dentist will consider several different factors when determining your wisdom teeth removal cost. The necessity for sedation, the surgical complexity, and your personal preferences can influence the final fees, including:

  • How many teeth need extraction
  • Whether the tooth is angled or trapped against another tooth
  • Characteristics of the tooth root
  • Features of the bones surrounding the tooth
  • How close the tooth is to nearby nerves
  • Whether the tooth has fully emerged (erupted) or is impacted
  • Whether you want all wisdom teeth managed at the same appointment or one at a time

The initial consultation includes an assessment of whether your wisdom teeth need removal or are safe to simply monitor. Our current fees for the consultation are as follows, correct as of Oct 2026:

New patients$130 inclusive of x-rays if required
Urgent consultation$100
Wisdom teeth 2D or 3D x-ray$100
Eligible WINZ quotesFree with an MSD number

If a wisdom tooth extraction is considered to be the right course of action for you, your dentist will discuss your options and provide a written quote with the price to get wisdom teeth removed. Our current fees for wisdom teeth surgery are as follows:

Wisdom tooth removal$400-800 per tooth
Wisdom tooth removal for all four$1600-4025
IV sedation$650-825 per session

Can Any Dentist Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Though wisdom teeth removal is within the scope of a general dentist, many will refer these cases to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Our principal dentist at Beyond Dental, Dr Jordan Walsh, has over a decade of clinical experience in managing wisdom teeth extraction, including complex cases and those requiring IV sedation. This means you get continuity of care from your initial consultation and examination all the way to wisdom tooth surgery and follow-up care, all with the same dentist you know and trust. In select cases, you may still require referral for specialist care.

What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Surgery and Post-op Recovery

The idea of any sort of surgical procedure can be daunting for many. If your dentist recommends having one or more wisdom teeth extracted, they will explain why, what to expect during a wisdom tooth extraction, and how you can make your recovery period as smooth as possible.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

On the day of your appointment, your dentist will ensure you are as comfortable as possible. This will involve numbing the area around the tooth with a local anaesthetic. If your dentist expects the procedure to take longer, such as if there are multiple wisdom teeth that need attention, it is anticipated to be a complex surgery, or you are very anxious, our experienced dentists can offer the option of sedation.

Extracting the tooth may require an incision in the nearby gum or cutting the tooth into pieces that can be more easily removed. In some cases, a small amount of bone surrounding the tooth may also be removed. A simple, straightforward extraction for one tooth takes around 20 minutes, while more complex cases can approach an hour in duration.

Wisdom Tooth Recovery

A wisdom tooth extraction is a day procedure performed in our rooms at Beyond Dental; you can expect to go home soon after your procedure but we recommend having someone to drive you if you had your procedure under sedation.

Recovery after wisdom tooth removal will vary between individuals but the majority of our patients can return to their typical activities within the week. Mild swelling and tenderness around your mouth and jaw are expected for the first few days. Most of our patients feel back to normal after a few weeks.

Your dentist will explain the wisdom tooth surgery recovery guidelines and give you a written copy. This will include instructions for your early recovery including:

  • Eating only soft foods
  • Using an ice pack to manage pain and swelling
  • Resting and avoiding heavy lifting or vigorous activities
  • Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, but avoid forceful spitting or sucking on straws
  • Taking medications as prescribed by your dentist
  • Avoiding brushing directly over the extraction site while brushing your teeth
Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Not everyone requires the removal of all wisdom teeth. Treatment decisions depend on positioning, symptoms and long-term risk of complications.

The price to get wisdom teeth removed will vary depending on the complexity of your situation, the number of teeth needing removal, and whether you have an eligible dental insurance policy. Our current fees start from $400 per tooth, with IV sedation starting from $650 per session if you opt for this. You can find more information about our wisdom teeth removal cost above on this page or on our fees page.

Complications from wisdom teeth removal are not common, however, all surgical procedures come with risks, such as bleeding, swelling, an allergic reaction to the anaesthesia, or infection. Risks specific to wisdom teeth removal can include a dry socket (when the site of the extracted tooth doesn’t heal properly), jaw stiffness, accidental damage to other teeth or nearby nerves, or sinus problems. Your dentist will discuss your personal risk for encountering a complication from wisdom tooth surgery as the likelihood can depend on your medical history, jaw anatomy, and features of the wisdom tooth to be removed.

Surgical time varies depending on case complexity. Removal of a single tooth may take less time than the removal of multiple impacted teeth requiring surgical access.

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. You may feel pressure sensations, but sharp pain should not occur. Sedation options may be discussed where appropriate.

Most patients begin feeling significantly better within a few days, though full healing may take longer. Individual recovery varies depending on age, health and surgical complexity.
